Our name ‘Khatulistiwa’ means the equator line, since our city, Pontianak, Indonesia, is crossed by the equator. KHaChiFA is a painting study club for children under the direction of the art teacher Mrs. Ary Widiasmoro. Around 15 - 20 Children study here every Saturday afternoon.

The children often participate in local, national or international art competitions. Most of the children received prizes, especially in local competitions.

The children not only participate in competitions but they carry out social activities in cooperation with other organizations, such as local government, NGOs, social and professional organizations. The children design artwork and sell it at auctions. The children had earned Rp. 55.000.000 (US $ 5500 ), and donated the money to build a school for children at Yogyakarta, a town affected by the earthquake in 2006. They also donated money to the orphans. We hope these activities can encourage our children to have empathy for other children.

In preparing for the International Children’s Art competition to design a UN stamp on the theme ‘We can end poverty’, the children and their teacher had an intense discussion on the theme “we can end poverty’. The teacher asked “What can we do to end poverty?” Most of the children said that we had to do something to earn money.

Bryan Jevoncia had an idea, he said that his mom liked sewing, so children could use leftovers from the materials not used by their moms and make something useful out of it and then sell it.

Rida Asanadia said that most Indonesian people are farmers, so we have to support them by giving them free fertilizers, improving transportation facilities and in this way help to end poverty in Indonesia.

Alyarosa Taqwaariva had another idea; she said that there were many causes of poverty, such as lack of education or natural disaster. To end poverty all of people have to work together shoulder to shoulder.

Rising Demander had another idea; he said eliminating poverty should be done together by government and family. They have to work together as a team, also children have to consume healthy food so they can become a productive generation to end poverty.
