Adolescence and the transition to adulthood are times characterized by independence from parents and older adults and seeking close ties with peers and friends. This age range is also characterized by experimenting new ideas, life styles, and making choices that not always prove to be right. These experimentations many times lead to uncertain outcomes which lead some youths to start using drugs, tobacco, and alcohol as a means of escaping those situations.
The excessive usage of such substances leads to substance abuse. Substance abuse has many negative physiological and psychological health effects. Drug abuse as it continues to be a strategy among youths to cope with various socioeconomic and psychological problems. Keeping in mind that youths are a vulnerable population, it is crucial for the international community to address this matter.
