UN Economic and Social Council high-level meeting opens with focus on jobs crisis

The United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) today opened its high-level meeting in New York with a focus on the global jobs crisis and the search for ways to stimulate the creation of decent and sustainable employment.

“For today’s 205 million unemployed, work is worryingly difficult to find – and finding decent, meaningful work, harder still,” the Council’s President, Ambassador Milos Koterec of Slovakia, said at the opening of ECOSOC’s high-level segment.

UN development cooperation forum ends with call for strong collaboration among states

A United Nations forum on development cooperation ended on 6 July 2012 for a call for increased collaboration and accountability among countries, and incorporation of sustainability objectives.

“The international community must accelerate its efforts to promote mutual accountability among all actors,” said the President of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), Milos Koterec. “Strong global and regional-level frameworks are needed to accelerate country-level progress. Political will and leadership from programme countries and providers, strong institutions and legal frameworks are crucial to change behaviour and increase results.”

UN Economic and Social Council high-level segment ends with call for partnerships

The United Nations Economic and Social Council’s (ECOSOC) high-level segment ended today with the adoption of a ministerial declaration calling for strengthened partnerships amongst Governments, the private sector and civil society to address issues that are crucial for providing full employment and decent work.

“It has been a very successful week,” said the President of ECOSOC, Miloš Koterec in his closing statement to the high-level segment, adding that Member States need to build on this success to keep reforms going and facilitate information-sharing and partnership building.
