World Down Syndrome Day, 21 March 2014

In December 2011, the General Assembly declared 21 March as World Down Syndrome Day (A/RES/66/149). The General Assembly decided, with effect from 2012, to observe World Down Syndrome Day on 21 March each year, and Invites all Member States, relevant organizations of the United Nations system and other international organizations, as well as civil society, including non-governmental organizations and the private sector, to observe World Down Syndrome Day in an appropriate manner, in order to raise public awareness of Down syndrome.
The World Down Syndrome Day will be commemorated on 21 March 2014 at UN Headquarters (1:30 – 6:00 pm, ECOSOC Chamber (CB)). This year's theme is “Health and well-being – access and equality for all”. The event is organized by Down Syndrome International, in collaboration with the Permanent Missions of Australia, Brazil, India, Poland and Japan, UNDESA, UNICEF, WHO and the International Disability Alliance.
An opening session proceeds four panel discussions on "Equal access - addressing healthcare without discrimination, bias, or misinformation at the marco and micro level", "Equal care - common health concerns faced by persons with Down syndrome and medical best practices", "Equal research emphasis - areas of promise; latest DS research; DS and Alzheimer's Disease" and "Equal prospects - importance of physical and mental care".
